Roam Like Home picThe head of Canada’s biggest wireless service provider says he’s opening a new front in the mobile battleground.

Guy Laurence announced today (Friday) that Rogers is cutting the cost of roaming in Europe, effective next Wednesday, making it the first major carrier to offer flat-rate roaming in over 35 countries.

It will cost 10 dollars a day to use your smartphone in Europe the same way you do at home, to a max of 100 dollars per monthly bill.

Laurence says over a million Canadians have already enrolled in flat-rate U-S roaming, and he says adding Europe will really shake things up.

A Nielsen survey revealed today that 30% of Ontarians who travel or intend to travel to Europe typically turn off their phones except in emergencies to avoid roaming charges.

Nielsen says roughly 2.3-million Ontarians plan on travelling to Europe in the next 12 months.
