Payment for water meter rates is still the big debate at Council. Last night (Monday) an amendment was made to the original proposal of a 60-fixed 40-variable split cost.

Councillor Daryl Vaillancourt says he thinks it should be a 40-60 split and brought forward the amendment.

With five councillors voting on either side the amendment lost, but Vaillancourt called a motion for reconsideration.

Vaillancourt says he believes the one absent councillor from last night, will vote in his favor in two weeks.

Mayor Al McDonald says he voted in favor of the amendment because of savings for the residents.

The amendment will be voted on again in two weeks as there was a motion for reconsideration called. If that is defeated, they will then vote on the original proposal for a 60-fixed-40-variable split.

That’s one which Chair of Engineering and Works Tanya Vrebosch agrees with because of the differences in saving money and paying more.

Vrebosch says it’s a good reason on why transitioning residents is a better option.

Deputy Mayor Sheldon Forgette says he doesn’t support a 40-fixed-60-variable split.

Forgette says there should be an easy transition into water meters and that would mean starting with the 60-40 fixed-variable split.
