OPPNorth Bay OPP say a 49 year old Bonfield Township man has died after an incident on Sunday afternoon.

Further investigation has determined that Roland BELLAIRE (49) was operating his snow machine over open water on Lake Nosbonsing when he failed to make it across safely.

Bystanders located a canoe and rescued him from the waters.

They brought him to shore and performed CPR.  North Bay and District Ambulance Service and the Bonfield volunteer fire department also attended the scene to assist with the investigation.

Police say the victim was transported to hospital with life threatening injuries where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The North Bay OPP urges all snowmobilers to stay off of lakes and rivers as the ice conditions change very quickly and can be very unpredictable this time of year.

 

Police (north bay)Meantime, city police reporting a 30 year old city man has been charged with several firearm related counts.

Police say the charges include unauthorized possession of a restricted weapon, possessing a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, possessing a restricted weapon with ammunition, careless storage of a firearm and possessing property obtained by crime.

Police say the charges relate to a handgun that was found in a city residence. Police say the handgun is the same one that was reported stolen from a break and enter that occurred in South River in February 2012.

Overall, it was a busy weekend for North Bay Police with 253 calls for service.

10 people were charged for various offenses including public intoxication, theft under 5 thousand dollars, impaired driving and offenses related to a firearm.

OPP advise highway 64 near Field is closed because of a culvert being washed out. This affects motorists who are travelling between Highways 17 West and 11 North.

Police say the closure will be in effect for 48 hours.
