Police (north bay)The North Bay Police Service is joining police services across Ontario in the Drive Safe campaign.

The May long weekend marks the kick-off to the campaign.

Police are raising awareness on the dangers of distracted driving, which is now the number one cause of traffic-related deaths in Ontario.

Motorists are advised to stay alert, be ready to stop for pedestrians, cyclists and children who may not be aware of the rules of the road.

Tips include putting your phone out of sight when driving, create a playlist before you hit the road so you don’t have to change the music, and take a break by stopping to eat.

 

OPPMeantime, North Bay OPP say the Victoria Day Long weekend is one of the busiest weekends of the year and they have a series of tips to keep everyone safe.

Police say always be aware of traffic around you, wear your seatbelt, don’t use hand held electronic devices while behind the wheel, be patient and be a sober driver.

Meantime, police remind boaters that a Pleasure Craft Operators card is required, they also advise people to be a sober boater and wear personal flotation devices.

In terms of ATV’s, tips include knowing local bylaws, wearing a helmet and riding alcohol and drug free.
