More than 100,000 unnecessary eye-related visits to the emergency room took place in Ontario last year. This is Vision Health Month and Doctor Jeff Goodhew says they want to get the message out there – that people should be visiting an optometrist under these circumstances. Goodhew is the President of the Ontario Association of Optometrists – and he says they are probably even better suited to treat these emergencies than a doctor in the E.R.

He says “I’m not trying to put down E.R. doctors and physicians, however optometrist have the training, the expertise and the equipment to deal with eye emergencies – plus we deal with these all day, every day so we are experts in that space.”

Goodhew says this would also cut down on the OHIP fees and delays in patient care.

He says if you visit – www.findanoptometrist.ca you will find an optometrist close to where you live or work.
