The Snowbirds first Canadian performance of the 2015 season will be over North Bay’s waterfront as a part of Armed Forces Day.

 

The Royal Canadian Air force Snowbirds demonstration team will be a part of today’s (Wednesday) Armed Forces Day festivities.

They will be performing some their trademark aerial maneuvers over Lake Nipissing beginning at 1:15pm.

Public Affairs Officer Lieutenant Patricia Brunelle says they are really looking forward to the show.


snowbirds - 1Brunelle says the Snowbirds team use this as an opportunity to show the other members of the Canadian Armed Forces that they appreciate the work they do.

Armed Forces Day will also include a military parade, the Pan Am Games Torch Relay and dignitary speeches. There’s also ground displays of military vehicles and equipment.

7,000 to 10,000 people are expected at the waterfront for the event, including students from 25 schools.

The Snowbirds airshow will be simulcast on Country 600 CKAT, starting after the 1 o’clock news.

 

Pan Am mascot Meantime, Toronto is hosting the Pan Am Games next month and the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Torch Relay is travelling across the province.

Today (Wednesday) it arrives in North Bay and will be a part of Armed Forces Day.

Members of the Soldier ON program will be carrying the Torch for part of the relay.

Soldier ON empowers retired and serving military members with an illness or injury to accept their new normal by adopting an active lifestyle.

The community cauldron will be lit around 12:30 pm.

Along with North Bay, the relay is visiting several area communities today, including Sturgeon Falls, Powassan, South River and Sundridge.

 

And motorists need to be aware of a few traffic notes with today activities.

From 8am until 4pm, Memorial Drive will be closed to traffic.

Officials say the military parade will leave City Hall and venture down to the waterfront just after 11:30 am with motorists advised to expect short delays.

A convoy of vehicles with the Pan Am Torch Relay will be making their way to the waterfront around noon.

They’re travelling from Highway 17 West at Gormanville Road to Algonquin, then Jane Street.

Around 1:15 the Torch Relay will take the pedestrian underpass to leave the waterfront, then travel along Main Street to Fisher and then onto the bypass.
