snow plowMore equipment and anti-icing liquids before storms.

Those are two initiatives the province says are included in their Winter Highway Maintenance Action Plan in response to a report from the Auditor General.

Back in April, Ontario’s Auditor General said Ontario’s highways during winter are less safe now than they were in 2009.

The province says they’ll add more more equipment  like standalone spreaders in remote, rural and congested urban areas, apply more anti-icing liquids to roads before winter storms and improve the Ontario 511 website by adding live camera images and time-stamped road condition information.

Along with working with contractors to improve equipment readiness and ensure there are trained operators available during the winter season, the province says they’re adding dash cams in patrol vehicles and install more than 30 stand-alone roadside cameras at strategic locations.
