Meantime, four local high school teams opened their football seasons on Friday. 

A 7-4 preseason win for the North Bay Battalion over the Owen Sound Attack yesterday. The Troops used six different goal scorers in the victory.

Battalion Zach Bratina, Mathew Santos, Kyle Moore with two, Mike Baird and Miles Liberati found the back of the net.

The Troops scored two on the power play and three shorthanded in the win Matt Woroniuk went the distance in goal for the Troops making 36 saves in the win.

Both teams play again today, this time in North Bay. Puck drop is at 4pm at Memorial Gardens.

 

 

Four straight wins to start the year for the Powassan Voodoos. Their latest a convincing 5-1 win over the Beavers in Blind River last night.

voodoosThe Voodoos led 5-0 going into the third with goals from Josh Ibbitson, Daniel Golba, Steve Harland, Aaron Dart and Michael Silveri.

Net minder Mario Cavaliere made 22 saves in the win while Eric Nagy chipped in with three assists.

They are back at home on Monday night as the Voodoos face the Espanola Express at the Powassan Sportsplex. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.

 

 

 

Nipissing Lakers Women’s soccer team fell 2-1 to the Ottawa Gee Gee’s yesterday.

The Lakers are now 3-3-1 on the year and were riding a two game winning streak coming into the contests.

The undefeated Gee Gee’s opened the game with a goal in the 12th minute. Selena Innamorati scored her second goal of the season to tie the game before the half.

Ottawa took the lead for good in the 75th minute. Carlee Bennard was busy and very strong in net, but was tagged with the loss. The Lakers will host the Carleton Ravens this afternoon at 12pm.

In Nipissing Lakers Hockey pre-season play, the women’s side defeated York at home yesterday by a score of 7-3. Jylelle Carpenter-Boesch, Taylor Murphy, Janica Vossos, Sam Strassburger, Brittany Taylor, Natalie Graham and Ava Keis all scored for Nipissing.

Micaela Stutzki and Sabrina Picard shared the crease in the win.

The men came away with a 3-2 win over U of T. Lakers’ goals came from Colin Campbell, Erik Robichaud and Guillaume Naud. Domenic Graham and Kirk Rafuse shared the win, splitting time between the pipes.

In Nipissing Lakers Volleyball exhibition play, the Women defeated Canadore 3-2, but fell to Humber 3-1. On the men’s side the Lakers were victorious 3-0 over Humber.
