Over the next month Walmart and it’s customers in North Bay have the chance to support Canadian Red Cross disaster preparedness and response activities.

Officials launched the fundraising campaign today (Thursday) with cashiers offering customers the opportunity to make a donation to support the work of the Canadian Red Cross in their community.

Branch Ambassador Dennis Chippa says it’s a critical program.

He says they’ve already helped out 78 people this year, up from 70 in all of last year.

The fundraising goal is $12,000 over the next month.

He says another aspect of the campaign is public awareness and getting people to think about being prepared for a disaster.

Chippa says they always say by getting ready for three days without power by having various items on hand, including water, canned food, a manual can opener, cash and more.
