robgodwinA scientist who recently made a key discovery will be one of the guest speakers at YYB World Space Week which gets underway tomorrow (Thursday) in North Bay.

Robert Godwin‘s talk on the history of Canadian aerospace goes at 8:15 am at Canadore’s Aviation Campus.

He says it was always believed that the concept of rocket powered space travel using scientific principles wasn’t in the domain until the early 1900’s, when in fact he’s learned a Queens University principal was proposing this about 50 years earlier.

Meantime, he says there will be a North Bay development in his talk, as there was a movement in the 50’s for Commonwealth countries like Canada to be part of the space race in addition to Russia and USA.

Godwin says he will also touch on the Avro Arrow and the Bomarc Missile.

Overall, he plans on discussing the events from the Canadian Rocket Society of the 1940’s to the recent exploits of Col. Chris Hadfield to everything in between in his talk.

He says Canada became an important place for aerospace exploration because it has a northern location and because of interest in the Northern Lights.
