OPP The Almaguin Highlands Detachment of the OPP have released statistics from the fall seat belt campaign and operation impact.

The seat belt campaign resulted in 28 charges for people not wearing their seat belt. Police say not doing so is against the law.

42 people have lost their lives on OPP patrolled roads this year due to not wearing a seat belt. That’s up from 34 last year. The campaign was from September 23rd to last Friday.

Meantime, Operation Impact happened this long weekend. Police were looking for instances of distracted driving, speeding, impaired driving and failing to wear a seat belt.

In the Almaguin Highlands area, 73 speeding charges were laid, there were 13 seat belt counts, two distracted driving charges, a stunt driving charge and 9 other Highway Traffic act offenses.
