(File photo submitted) The economy is the focus for Prime Minister Stephen Harper as the election campaign winds down.

That was the topic of discussion with our newsroom as the Conservative leader says key planks include balancing the federal books, lowering taxes for small businesses and workers, creating jobs and providing new tax relief and benefits to families and seniors.

He also says they’re opening new markets that will benefit manufacturing and various northern sectors.

Harper also took aim at those looking to go into deficit.

He says “Once you go down the road of deficits all the time, not just in times of recession, but in times of growth as well you’ll have a permanent deficit and we’ll have the mess we have at Queen’s Park, federally and we don’t need that at both levels of government.”

Meantime, Harper was asked about the Energy East Pipeline proposal and if there’s too high a risk or price to pay with creating some jobs, considering there’s concern locally about protecting drinking water.

In terms of the aerospace sector locally, Harper says their action plan isn’t just about taxes and trade.

Election Day is Monday.

On a lighter note, Harper was asked who he thinks will win the ALCS, the Toronto Blue Jays or Kansas City Royals?
