rota wins
Liberal Anthony Rota won the election in Nipissing-Timiskaming on Monday night

Anthony Rota is returning to Parliament as Nipissing-Timiskaming’s MP.

Four years after losing by 18 votes in the May 2011 election, Rota defeated Conservative incumbent Jay Aspin by a margin of nearly 11,000 votes this time around and joins a Liberal majority government.

Rota says he’s proud of the campaign they ran, taking the high road and giving the facts.

When asked if he’s looking for a cabinet position, Rota says he’s just happy and proud to be the MP for Nipissing-Timiskaming and is looking forward to serving the people of the riding.

Aspin garnered 14,320 votes and was philosophical in defeat.

Aspin says one accomplishment stands out for him as MP for the last 4 years, the aerospace initiatives he has started and that he says ranks as a major accomplishment.

He also says he raised the bar and did a lot for the riding and doesn’t think there was something he didn’t do that led to his defeat on Monday night.

The NDP’S Kathleen Jodouin was third with 7,992 votes while the Green Party’s Nicole Peltier garnered 1,277 votes to finish fourth.

Voter turnout in Nipissing-Timiskaming was 69% in this election.

That’s up 9% from the last Federal vote.

In fact, it’s the highest turnout since the 1988 election, at 74%, although the 2006 vote was at 67.6%.
