CUPE rally NNDSB

There are about 300 CUPE Local 1165 workers in the local education sector waiting on a new contract.

Those include Custodial, Maintenance, Office, Clerical, Technicians, Transportation and Food workers.

About a dozen union members (pictured above) held a rally Tuesday evening outside of the Near North District School Board office, during a Trustee meeting.Colin MacDougall is the President of the Local and he says they were there to let the Trustees know they want an agreement and hopefully the Trustees can put some more pressure on their people to get one done.

Board Chair Dave Thompson says they too hope it’s an issue that is resolved quickly.

Meantime, he says they are also dealing with the Elementary Job Action – which means teachers are not participating in extracurricular activities.

He says “it affects the students, I know the teachers don’t want to do this but it’s part of their strike mandate. It’s just unfortunate that students always get caught up in this and they are the ones that lose.”

Thompson says there are no sports, clubs or field trips taking place.
