With 21 percent of the vote, they’re the Top Local Sports Story of 2015 as voted on in our informal, online survey.

Nearly 300 votes were cast.

This year’s top local newsmaker, Ken Appleby, winning the Memorial Cup with his Oshawa teammates and signing an NHL entry level deal with New Jersey was number two with 19 percent.

Third place goes to the city hosting a successful 2015 Special Olympics Ontario Winter Games.

Fourth was Nick Paul winning gold with Team Canada at the World juniors and signing an NHL entry level deal with Ottawa followed by North Bay’s Rhane Daly Stevens winning his second Canadian Karate Championship title.

Meantime, three sports stories tied for sixth.

They include Former Y Titan Dominique Bouchard winning 2 silver at the Pan Am Games and two gold at the Canadian Nationals, the Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour stopping in North Bay and the Battalion losing to Oshawa in the OHL Eastern Conference Final.
