NU lakersBoth Nipissing Lakers basketball and hockey teams were in action last night.

Both hockey teams were successful, But the basketball teams, fell short.

The Nipissing Lakers women’s hockey team were struggling in the opening period last night against the York Lions.

They were outshot 13-3 and fell 2 points behind.

Things turned around however in the second, after Brooklyn Irwin, with assists from Sam Strassburger and Alexane Papineau, scored the opening goal for the Lakers.

Stacey Henshaw then tied the game with three minutes left in the period. Zosia Davis and Kaley Tienhaara assisted Henshaw.

Taylor Murphy then scored her second game winning goal of the season in the third period, giving the Lakers their 3-2 win.

A good win for Nipissing as for the past week and a half, the Lakers have lost 3 straight games.

Picard made 25 saves in net in the game.

The Lakers are back on home ice this afternoon in their annual Pink the Rink game, against the Brock Badgers.

Puck drop is 4:30pm at Memorial Gardens.

 

An overtime win for the Nipissing Lakers men’s hockey team last night against the Laurentian Voyageurs.

5-4 was the final after Colin Campbell scored the game winner.

Kirk Rafuse was in net, where he made 30 saves in the win.

A couple Lakers had similar stats at the end with Joel Herbert, Cody Gratton and Craig Campbell all earning a goal and an assist in the win, with Brock Morrison and Dane Horvat also earning assists.

The rematch is scheduled for 7pm tonight at Memorial Gardens

 

A fall to the Toronto Varsity Blues last night for the Nipissing Lakers women’s basketball team.

After the first period, the Lakers were behind 19-12.

The second quarter saw some improvement as they were only down 5 points going into halftime.

Unfortunately Toronto wasn’t having any of it, as the Blues used the third quarter to take control of the game. They finished the third with a 20 point lead, 64-44.

And even though the Lakers outshot the Blues 19-16 in the final quarter, it wasn’t enough, as he team fell 80-63.

Claire Abbott led the attack for the Lakers with 21 points, Jamie Soffer added 14 points and Alexe Galipeau-Wilson put up 10 points herself.

Tonight sees a home game for the Lakers. It’s the Ryerson Rams against Nipissing, tip-off is 6pm

 

An exciting game last night featuring the Nipissing Lakers men’s basketball team and the Toronto Varsity Blues.

Each team had different moments of greatness with each taking the lead and fighting back. However, one team had to win, and the Blues took out the Lakers, 73-69.

Building up to the win was exhilarating as during the first quarter, the teams were still neck and neck with both teams tied at 17 at the end.

The second quarter saw the Lakers take control, leading 39-31 at the end.

The Blues made their comeback during the third quarter, outscoring the Lakers by three points.

And during the fourth quarter, Toronto put everything they had into their victory.

However, the drama happened after the Blues missed a free throw. The officials concluded that they had called for the buzzer at the wrong time and allowed the team to re-shoot.

Marcus Lewis lead the Lakers last night with 21 points, Jerron Rhodes made 15 and Puddister scored 11 in the loss.

8pm tonight sees the Lakers back in action, taking on the Ryerson Rams.
