freezing cold ice winter scraper snowAn extreme cold warning continues for the time being, but Environment Canada says windchills will finally improve more significantly this afternoon (Sunday).

An Arctic ridge of high pressure moving east across the Great Lakes and Northern Ontario continues to deliver the coldest air of the season so far.

Extreme wind chills of minus 40 to minus 45 are expected this morning.

Meantime, Saturday was record-breaking in terms of the low temperature.

The mercury bottomed out at minus 37.7 degrees.

That freezes out the previous record of minus 31.1 set back in 1970.

We came close to a record for February 14th when the temperature bottomed out at minus 33.7.

That’s 0.2 degrees shy of the 1943 record.
