There’s a local connection to last weekend’s number four movie at the North American Box Office.

“The Witch” was filmed outside Calvin Township, near Kiosk in the spring of 2014. The movie is set in 1630s New England, but local residents will know better.

Mattawa-Bonfield Economic Development Director Jeff McGirr says they’ll definitely recognize the backdrop in the main scenes and the woods along with the overall feel of our local trees and creeks.

IMDB.com sums up “The Witch” as a movie about a family torn apart by the forces of witchcraft, black magic and possession.

It’s showing in a couple thousand theatres, including Galaxy Cinemas North Bay.

Prior to pulling in $8.8-million in it’s opening weekend, “The Witch” director Robert Eggers won the directors award at the Sundance Film Festival.
