North Bay Police report a 49 year old Ottawa man is facing mischief and obstruct police charges after an alleged kidnapping incident turned out to be false.

At about midnight a 911 call was received by a man, who was previously reported missing from the Ottawa area after failing to show up for work yesterday (Monday).

He claimed to have been kidnapped at gunpoint in the Ottawa area and driven to North Bay.

The alleged victim’s name and vehicle description were given then he screamed and the phone line was lost.

Police used cellphone triangulation and identified the victim to be in the Monestary Road area.

Acting Sgt Peter Brunette says 21 officers were dispatched to the area of the escarpment with OPP and Anishnabek Police also involved.  “It was a real drain on our resources along with the resources for the Ontario Provincial Police.”

North Bay Police Service patrol, North Bay Police Service Emergency Response, OPP Canine, OPP Emergency Response and Anishnabek Police Service all responded.

Nipissing University, the North Bay Regional Health Centre and the OPP District Headquarters were put on lock-down during the incident.

Around 3 am the man was found and arrested in the area of the hospital, with the investigation revealing the allegations were false.
