hospice dollar

Officials with the Nipissing Serenity Hospice board came to council this week, thanking the city for the location of the yet-to-be built facility.

They presented Mayor Al McDonald with a framed $1 bill.

Earlier this year, the city offered the land near Laurier Woods to the board for $1.

Dr. Klere Bourgault is on the hospice board and a palliative care physician.

She says she has dedicated her professional life promoting the need for hospices to exist. She says we’re all going to die but there are things the community can do for patients who are going through that experience, making the journey more humane.

Dr. Bourgault says a hospice can also benefit the surviving family members who are going through a difficult time during a loved ones death.

Board chair Mathilde Gravelle-Bazinet says they need to raise $6-Million to build the facility and are hoping to receive federal and provincial funding.

In terms of construction, the hope is to see work start in the spring, with the facility to be open by next Christmas.
