Police chiefs around the country are offering reaction to the report by a federal task force on legalized recreational marijuana, including locally.

The task force is recommending storefront and mail-order sales to Canadians 18 years and older, with personal growing limits of four plants per person.

North Bay Police Chief Shawn Devine says whatever the federal legislation entails police have a responsibility to enforce the law.

Devine says the legislation will have implications for the community and the police.

He sees marijuana as a challenge they’ll have to face, especially the addictions piece as it applies to youth and people with mental health issues.

Meantime, Devine compares the number of plants aspect to the liquor license act, meaning officers are out there to ensure the law is followed and that’s what they’ll do.

As for monitoring motorists who are driving while impaired by drug, he says they’re doing that now.

There are trained officers who can detect people who have been using a banned substance or are impaired by drug while driving.
