The County of Renfrew in Eastern Ontario is pushing for Highway 17 to be 4 laned throughout Northern Ontario.

They made a presentation to North Bay City City Council for their endorsement of the plan and they received it.

Peter Emon  is the Reeve of the town of Renfrew.

He says they want their area four laned but also for 417 to be extended throughout Eastern and Northern Ontario.

He points out 17 is the Trans Canada Highway and yet it is 2 laned only from Renfrew to North Bay and beyond until you get in to Manitoba.

He says there would also be economic benefits to four laning highway 17 in Northern Ontario and would connect North Bay, Sudbury and Ottawa.

As well, he says the senior levels of government could create a prosperous trade corridor.

The County of Renfrew includes 17 communities including Deep River, Petawawa, Renfrew and Pembroke.
