Quite the discovery on Monday in front of a Lee Avenue home.

North Bay Police Sgt. Mike Hunter says they received a call from public works about a mortar shell being discovered during some excavating work.

He says the shell is 12 inches in length and 3 inches in diameter and looks like a very large bullet.

Sgt. Hunter says they contacted the OPP, who in turn let the military know.

After they saw some pictures they came to the scene.

Hunter says this wasn’t a live ordinance, but a training round, with the shell then taken to Ottawa for further investigation.

He says the area was evacuated for about 20-30 minutes as a pre-caution.
