The NHL is back with four games on the schedule tonight (Wednesday).

The Toronto Maple Leafs open the new campaign in Winnipeg, taking on the Jets.

Broadcast time on Country 600 CKAT and Sportsnet is 7 pm.

Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos says the Leafs can score, but there are issues in the crease.

“To really go to that next level in the Eastern Conference, to think that you can really get to a Conference final or Stanley Cup Final, that Goals Against Average is going to have to get a lot better,” he says.

Later on Edmonton entertains Calgary (10 pm on Sportsnet).

Kypreos says they’ll be watching to see how Jaromir Jagr fits into the Flames line-up, but also says it’ll be interesting to see if Connor McDavid can build on being the leading point-getter and reigning MVP.

“Can he now go into the 120/130 point range? Is there enough scoring around him, much like Gretzky had with Coffey and Kuri and Messier around him,” he says.

As for the Habs, Kypreos believes Jonathan Drouin will be a superstar in Montreal, but there’s not enough depth to make them a Stanley Cup contender.

Montreal’s first game is tomorrow night (Thursday) in Buffalo.

The Ottawa Senators also play tomorrow night, at home to Washington.

Kypreos says there’s a lot of good players returning this year, but money is an issue in Ottawa with an internal salary cap and who they can re-sign down the road are concerns.

The NHL’s newest team, the Vegas Golden Knights don’t play their first game until Friday night (@Dallas — 8:30 pm on Sportsnet 360).

Kypreos predicts they will be entertaining and competitive, but they aren’t expect them to make the playoffs.

“Much like the Vancouver Canucks we don’t believe that they have the skill level to truly compete for a playoff spot, but there are some nights that Marc-Andre Fleury will indeed put them in a position, not only to stay close in games, but win games, as well,” he says.

Elsewhere tonight, the defending Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins are home to St Louis while San Jose entertains Philadelphia.
