It’s Halloween and North Bay Police want everyone to be safe while trick or treating tonight (Tuesday).

Staff Sgt Rick Dubeau says motorists should drive slowly and anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic.

“Be more cognitive of their surroundings, be especially alert in residential neighbourhoods, children are excited, they may move unpredictably so take the extra time,” he says.

In terms of the kids, Dubeau says trick-or-treaters should look both ways before crossing the street and make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of vehicles.

But, that’s not all.

“It would be great if they can cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks, put your electronic devices down so you keep your head up, so you can see your surroundings,” he says.

Police also say decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors.

Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision.

Meantime, North Bay Fire and Emergency Services are again hosting their Halloween event from 5 pm to 8 pm at Fire Station One on Princess Street.

Also, Coach Stan Butler and the North Bay Battalion will be handing out Halloween goodies once again this year.

They’ll be at 6 Dellandrea Drive starting at 6 pm.

Sarge will also be there.
