North Bay resident James West died over 100 years ago working on the Welland Canal and now he has a funeral marker.

President of the Canadian Canal Society Bob Sears was at Discovery North Bay Museum on Wednesday presenting the funeral marker to the City of North Bay.

West died in 1915 and like 52 other fallen workers, his grave is unmarked.

“As a military person, we honour those who served their country, and these were people that were serving their country as well,” Sears says.

Sears says West, who had a wife and two children, died after being struck by a passenger train while crossing the tracks to get to the machine shops.

Museum Director/Curator Naomi Rupke says it was really interesting to learn West was one of 137 workers who died working on the Canal.

“And great to have an event here at the Museum to try to raise awareness and also hopefully attract attention from any descendants who may be interested in learning more about James West,” she says.

A ceremony will be held in the spring with the marker being placed at Terrace Lawn Cemetery.
