A couple area youth bowlers are heading to the Youth Challenge National Championship next March in Ottawa.

Liam Smith from Partners Bowling in North Bay and Felicity Eckensviller from Tri-Town Lanes in Haileybury both won silver in their individual events at the provincial 5 Pin championship in Thunder Bay on the weekend and advance to nationals.

15 area youth bowlers took part in provincials.

Eckensviller, Ryane Lafleur from Sturgeon Falls, Leah Spurvey, Kyrsten Tremblay, Emma Starcevic and Coach Natasha Smith from North Bay tied for 3rd place in the Ladies division but lost out via a tie-breaker rule.

Smith, Christopher MacLean, Noah Starcevic, Nicholas MacLean, Coach Flipper Smith from North Bay and Zachary Eckensviller from Haileybury finished in 4th place in the Men’s division.

Xavier Lafleur from Sturgeon Falls, Thomas Williams, Jake McKenny, Alexa Mitchella, Coach Barry Tremblay from North Bay and Alexis Antler, from Haileybury finished in 5th place in the Mixed division.

The Chippewa Raiders defeated Confederation 4-2 to win the 44th annual NDA high school hockey tournament Saturday at Memorial Gardens.

Chippewa went undefeated, winning all six games, to win the tournament for the second year in a row.

Twelve teams took part in the tournament including Algonquin, St Joseph-Scollard Hall, West Ferris and Widdifield.

 

A weekend split on the road for the North Bay Battalion, with three points in three games.

The Troops lost to Windsor last Thursday, defeated the number one ranked team in the country in Sarnia on Friday then lost in overtime in London on Saturday.

Next up, the Battalion are home to Mississauga on Thursday.

 

In the NOJHL, the Voodoos entertain Cochrane tonight at the Powassan Sportsplex.

The game gets underway at 7 o’clock.

On Saturday the Voodoos won 3-2 in overtime in Kirkland Lake.

 

The Christmas break has arrived for four more Nipissing varsity teams.

In women’s hockey, the Lakers lost 2-1 in Waterloo.

This after a 9-3 win in Windsor on Saturday.

In OUA men’s hockey, Nipissing lost both of their games to Concordia and McGill.

In men’s basketball, the Lakers split their games with a win over Western and a loss to Windsor.

The Nipissing women lost both their games.
