A segment with the Nipissing Trackers that airs tonight on the Rick Mercer Report had all the elements of a perfect piece for the show.

That from Comedian Rick Mercer himself who says they were contacted by the Trackers, but also says the downhill ski program for kids with special needs had been on his radar too.

“It had all the elements of a perfect RMR piece. It’s got the great folks of North Bay, it’s got beautiful scenery, it’s got kids skiing, it’s got people doing an amazing thing, which is volunteering,” he says.

Mercer says it’s a real rush knowing this program is helping kids enjoy a sport they typically may not be able to.

“You just can’t beat it when you have a small kid who’s in a wheelchair, or what have you, I think that their family, and perhaps they think that at a certain point in their life there are certain things that they won’t be able to do, and probably downhill skiing is on that list, and because of the Trackers, no more, they’re going downhill fast,” he says.

The show airs at 8 o’clock tonight on CBC.

North Bay will be featured again next week when Mercer learns to fly a helicopter with Essential Helicopters at Canadore College.

This is the final season of the Rick Mercer Report.

“We’ve celebrated the people everywhere we’ve gone, we’ve celebrated the places we’ve gone, and I think people like that,” he says when asked about the show’s success.

Mercer also says with the country being so big, he says most people just don’t have the opportunity to take time and explore Canada so they live vicariously through the show.
