It’s called ‘The Journey’ and the framework of initiatives within Canada’s new Defence Policy – Strong, Secure, Engaged – are the focus of a presentation in the city tonight (Tues).

Nipissing Branch of the Canadian International Council is hosting Colonel Krista Brodie is Director Strategic Communications, Chief of Staff Strategic Military Personnel Command, Canadian Armed Forces/Department of National Defence.

She is responsible for developing the framework.

It involves modernizing support for military members and their families, doing away with “one size fits all” solutions.

“We need to be more sophisticated and nuanced about how we acknowledge the human dimension of service and how it impacts not only the member and the choices they make, but the sacrifices and choices that the family makes,” she says.

Colonel Brodie says there’s a message she’d like the audience to take home with them.

“That lives matter, and that in sharing our stories we are building collective experience that binds us together as a nation, and it reminds us of what we fight for and what’s worthy of defending,” she says, especially on the eve of this past weekend’s tragedy involving the Humboldt Broncos bus crash. “The goodness that we see in communities as they come together to support each other in times of tragedy are the things that are worthy of defending and fighting for.”

Colonel Brodie is also looking forward to presenting here in North Bay.

“North Bay just has such a neat military community, long-standing military tradition and a tremendous tradition of community support that it’s great that they reached out to us and we’re very honoured to come and be a part of that,” she says.

Tonight’s free presentation goes at 7 pm at the Legion on First Ave West.
