About 40 West Ferris Secondary students were putting their digital knowledge to work for a local business this week.

They learned about coding Tuesday morning, then used that knowledge to come up with innovative digital platform ideas for Suger Daddy Cupcakes and Catering.

Specialist High Skills Major – Business Educator Karen Bond tells BayToday the first goal is to expand community connections.

“Having them work with people in their local communities. Number two, is that we’re also trying to provide real-world, authentic type of learning opportunities for them,” she says.

Bond says they’re hearing the majority of students in grades two or three right now will have some sort of employment geared toward the digital world when they get into the workforce.

“We need to start doing a better job now, within our schools, to preparing them for those jobs that don’t even exist yet,” she says.
