The burning stench of forest fires in the northeast has returned to North Bay, with smoke moving back into the city Wednesday night.

The smoke is also thick in West Nipissing too (photo above submitted).

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says there are 50 active forest fires in the region, with 16 not yet under control.

Officials say fire activity in the Temagami area is now more manageable, with all of the fires classified as being held or under control.

They also say fire activity with Parry Sound 33, which has forced a number of evacuations, increased yesterday.
