Safety is the focus today at the Early ON Child and Family Centre on Chippewa Street.

Their 18th annual Safety Day goes from 9 am to noon, with several groups on hand, including city police, fire and ambulance, school bus officials, there’s car seat information and more.

Councillor Tanya Vrebosch will also be reading a children’s safety story at 10 am.

Officials say the parent and child interactive day is geared towards teaching safety in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

Several local groups are reminding residents it’s time to spring clean their medicine cabinets.

The 7th annual Medication Drug Drop-off Day goes tomorrow (Fri) at Shoppers Drug Mart on Cassells Street, from 10 am to 2 pm.

Unused or expired prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, vitamins and herbal supplements can be dropped off for safe disposal.

Officials say there are several goals with the event:
– To promote the safe storage and disposal of prescription, over-the counter and other drugs;
– To reduce the amount of drugs that are available in people’s homes;
– To reduce the environmental impact associated with the inappropriate disposal of these drugs in the garbage and sewer systems; and
– To increase awareness that unused or expired prescriptions, over-the-medications, vitamins and herbal supplements can be returned to any pharmacy for safe disposal any day of the year.

This event is organized by the Community Drug Strategy North Bay & Area Committee, the Stay on Your Feet Nipissing Parry Sound Coalition and the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit with the support of the North Bay Police Service.

 

Another 420 Canadore students in various programs are graduating today (Friday).

Actua CEO Jennifer Flanagan is the guest speaker. Twice named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women, Flanagan is described as a go-to thought leader and advocate for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in Canada.

Thursday’s convocation ceremony saw about 550 students graduate.

 

The chance to get involved with a Guinness World Record attempt comes tomorrow (Saturday) in North Bay.

Nipissing’s Motorcycle Ride for Dad is teaming up with a few partners, including Cor Maximus, for a free, 30-minute, low-impact Swiss ball exercise class at the Canadore gym tomorrow.

On site registration is at 9 am, with the class at 11 am.

Those taking part can purchase the Swiss ball afterwards for a $10 minimum donation to the Nipissing Motorcycle Ride For Dad.

 

Dancing With Our Ancestors – The Maamwi Kindasswin Pow Wow goes this weekend at Lee Park.

Officials say the traditional Pow Wow celebration is a family friendly event for all.

It’s being presented by the North Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre tomorrow and Sunday.
