A gold medal for North Bay’s Rob Shaw at the Parapan Am Games in Peru.

He won the wheelchair tennis quad singles event on Friday, defeating world number two David Wagner of the U.S.

It’s the first time a Canadian, stand-up or wheelchair has won a multi-sport medal in singles.

Shaw also becomes the first quad tennis champion at a Parapan Am Games, with the classification making its debut in Lima.

“It’s definitely the biggest win so far of my career as far as the magnitude of the stage, the amount of fans in the crowd. I’ve had bigger emotional ones for sure, but as far as the complete package, nothing is bigger than winning a gold medal,” says Shaw.

Overall, Canada won 60 medals at the games, including 17 gold, 21 silver and 22 bronze.
