North Bay City Council has supported the awarding of a $220,000 contract to Tatham Engineering so an Environmental Assessment and preliminary road design for an area that includes Lakeshore Drive and Pinewood Park Drive can be done.
City Councillor Dave Mendicino says that part of the city is going to get a lot busier traffic wise over the next few years due to the impact of building a casino but that’s not all.

“There’s future growth coming including a hotel and the community centre. We’ve seen traffic patterns and volumes continue to increase and they’ll continue to change,” he says.

Chair of Infrastructure and Operations Councillor Chris Mayne says he expects a report in the fall and will be looking for provincial support.

He says the options will include road improvements, additional lanes and a roundabout.

“An intersection might be considered by some groups to be short term where the roundabout improves traffic flow and improves access from the highway and Pinewood Park Drive into the Lakeshore Drive area,” Mayne says.

As well, Mendicino says Pinewood Park Drive is part of the city’s active transportation plan and has been identified as there being a regional cycling route nearby in Callander.
