The peanut butter and jelly sandwich is something that a lot of us grew up on and held us down during post-secondary or when money was tight. It’s also something we never seem to get tired of, probably because it, quick, inexpensive and most importantly tastes great. But apparently many of us haven’t perfected the art of the PB&J. Have no fear though, here are some things to avoid when making the old trusty sandwich, so you can take it to the next level!

  • Spreading the peanut butter on just one side: Spread it on both slices of bread to prevent sogginess, unless that’s exactly how you like it.
  • Not warming it up:  A room temperature PB&J sandwich will always hit the spot, but if you want to take it to the next-level. Butter up the sandwich and toss it in a frying pan like you would a grilled cheese sandwich.
  • Using the wrong jelly: Ditch the store-bought jelly, for a simple homemade one with less sugar and fewer preservatives.
  • Not adding fresh fruit: Try adding fresh fruit, like blueberries, sliced apples, pomegranate seeds or chopped bananas to your sandwich. It’ll add some more flavour plus help you knock out the daily suggested fruit intake.
  • Using only sliced bread: Nothing wrong with using the regular sliced bread, but get creative with the bread and swap sliced bread for rolled-up tortillas, waffles, and even pancakes.
  • Not trying crunchy peanut butter: A lot of people prefer smooth over chunky, but give chunky a shot and you’ll find that it adds a great balance of texture and taste.
  • Skimping on ingredients: If you take a bite of your PB&J, and taste mostly bread. You definitely want to reconsider how much of each ingredient you are putting into it.Try adding an eighth of an inch to a quarter of an inch of each ingredient on each piece of bread. If it still isn’t enough, keep adding till you get the perfect balance.
