A group of local residents say something has to be done about crime in North Bay.

Leslie McVeety and a handful of others set up a peaceful protest outside the courthouse this morning.

She says her residence was broken into in late August, with seven more attempted break-ins since.

“The same people you see on surveillance cameras time and time again and nothing is being done about it, there’s no consequences so nothing is stopping them, they have no fear,” McVeety says.

She says their message is for the courts.

“Jail people, put them in rehab, do something. They’re giving them less than a slap on the wrist and the criminals know this,” she adds.

The most recent attempted break-in was three weeks ago.

In air quotes, McVeety says one woman just walked into her place saying she was looking for a place to ‘rent.’

“You don’t just walk into someone’s house, clearly she was not looking for a place to rent. And then I noticed that after some of my other stuff was stolen,” McVeety says. “We’re tired.”
