Christmas lightsNational Home Fire Safety Week is just wrapping up and the Canada Safety Council wants your holidays to be safe.

Spokesperson Lewis Smith says candles are a big concern.

“It’s really important when you have an open flame like that, to take precautions to make sure they aren’t lit longer than they need to be. But also that they’re held on a flat surface as often as possible, to avoid them toppling over, or falling, or igniting something.”

Other tips include keeping the fireplace properly maintained, never leaving cooking unattended, checking to make sure that real Christmas tree isn’t too dry or ensuring artificial trees are “fire-resistent”.

Officials also say never leave lights plugged in when leaving the house and avoid metallic decorations because they could become a shock hazard.
