A big day at Nipissing University on Friday as the school officially opened its new turf field. President Dr. Mike De Gagne couldn’t be more excited.

“For environmental, community and safety reasons it made sense to build one. It feels tremendous to be a reality for our teams and community,” he says.

Construction on the $2.1 million project started in July and games have been played on it already.

It also has bleachers, a press box and a new scoreboard.

North Bay Youth Soccer contributed $60,000 to the cost of the project.

The university also launched a Buy and Brick fundraising campaign to help pay for the field.

Andrew Wood plays on the lacrosse team and says having a field at the school is a big deal.

“Veterans Field was always a home for us and we embraced it with everything that we had. Now we have our own home on campus and it’s the greatest feeling. I know all the guys on the team agree with that and the soccer teams do too,” Wood says.
