North Bay Police Chief Shawn Devine is reacting to an increase in the level of violent crime and sexual assault rates in the latest crime severity index information.

As we told you earlier this week, North Bay and Callander are 60th out 237 communities in the ‘violent crime’ category.

Devine points out the number of reported sexual assaults is a smaller number compared to the number of actual incidents.

He says in the next few months they will be educating officers on dealing with victims.

“I’m working with an educator. I believe an educator would be the best person to look at the information that has been compiled and be able to put it into a lesson plan. Police are good police, but we’re not good teachers,” he says.

Devine says that’s likely 6-8 months away at this point.
