A night of music and comedy is being hosted by Amelia Rising Sexual Assault Centre on Tuesday that is all about raising awareness about some serious topics.

It’s called ‘Rising Up!’ and the inaugural event is taking place at the Grande Event Centre.

Executive Director Brigitte Lebel says they want people to have fun and share some laughs, but also talk about consent and sexual violence.

She says over the last few years they’ve experienced a significant increase in demand for services from women who are survivors of sexual violence.

“There is a very, very rapidly growing wait list happening here at Amelia Rising from people right here in our community who have experienced recent or historical sexual assault,” Lebel says. “We’re imagining that it has to do with the ‘Me Too’ or ‘Times Up’ movements that are happening. But, either way, our funding hasn’t changed and it hasn’t changed in over 15 years.”

She says with the event they’re pulling the community together to gain support for the issue.

Performers at Tuesday night’s show include:
Angie Nussey, a singer/songwriter/speaker from Northern Ontario.
She has several awards from the Toronto Independent Music Awards, including Best Folk and Best Female Performer.
