The city is holding at dedication event and sign unveiling later this morning (Saturday) for it’s newly installed “Wheels to the Water” beach accessible mat.

The new beach mat allows people using wheelchairs, and those with other mobility issues, to access and enjoy Lake Nipissing.

It’s being named in honour of the late Adam “Wheels” Miller.

He was a strong advocate for reducing barriers and making all beaches accessible to everyone.

Adam’s family was at council in July when details were announced about the mat’s installation.

His sister, Candace Penasse, said Adam would have been touched with the honour.

“I remember after meetings he’d be so frustrated that things weren’t going his way. He fought to the end and he’s smiling down and so happy this is going to be happening,” she said.

Adam’s dad Wayne told reporters after the council meeting that he couldn’t be happier that the mat will be named after Adam.

“We’re very, very thankful and very, very proud. It means a lot to our family for them to acknowledge him and to have his name on it. It means a lot,” Wayne said.
