Education Day 2 About a thousand students were on hand for Education Day for World Space Week.

There were all kinds of displays and interactive demonstrations for students to take part in at 22 Wing.

As well Jayme Matthews held a talk called “Exploring planets far far away without hyper drive.

Matthews is a Professor of Astrophysics at the University of British Columbia and he says it’s important for students to understand the world we live in and be excited about space exploration.

But he adds he has to find a way to do it without getting too technical.

He says “I’m a kid at heart so it’ natural for me, I use toys like my ray gun. I use things that are down to Earth to explain what’s up there; I explain the physics of how we get to planets through swing dance using the music from the Cantina Band in Star Wars.”

Matthews says real science is catching up to science fiction.

He says “we’ve in fact found planets around binary stars that were like Tatooine in Star Wars were you have a twin sunset. So it’s an exciting time and I want to share that with students.”

Matthews says it’s important to find other worlds to better understand the one we live on.
