Wrestling fans will be gathering at Odyssee this weekend for the inaugural Miller Memorial Cup.

Saturday’s event goes at 3 pm and is being held to honour the memory of wrestling fan and promoter Adam “Wheels” Miller.

Northland Wrestling owner Dan Pigozzo says Adam was a huge wrestling fan and struggled on his own to put on events for several years, “He had moderate successes here and there, but the fact that he just kept going was a testament to his love and desire for it and the bulk of his shows, if not all of them, were charity shows.”

A portion of proceeds from Saturday’s event will be donated to the athletes of the Special Olympics in North Bay.

Elite wrestlers from all over Ontario will be competing to win the Miller Cup and the first ever “King of the North” Championship.

Pigozzo says there’s a rising interest in wrestling locally, “My plan is to run these shows more regularily. Next year I’m looking at running them four to five times a year and really ingraining them into the community.”
