The North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority says septic systems within 120 metres of a watercourse that flows within the Callander-Wasi watershed are being inspected.

It’s all about helping to protect water quality.

600 septic systems in Callander, Chisholm, East Ferris, Powassan and North Bay need to be inspected every five years.

Officials say faulty systems can contribute phosphorus to creeks, streams, rivers and lakes.

The local drinking water source protection program has identified phosphorus as a factor that contributes to the growth of blue green algae.

During the last round of inspections, problems were found in 20 septic systems.
