An update on a provincial funding announcement made late last week to address homelessness locally.

The District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board says the $4.2 million will be used for continued operations of the low barrier shelter, warming centre and isolation space until March 31st.

It also recovers costs retroactive to early July, recovers capital costs with the Chippewa location and will be used to increase stock of transitional housing by 20 new modular designed units.

“The DNSSAB is extremely pleased with the provincial allocation for Nipissing and that the business case prepared by the DNSSAB has been approved,” says DNSSAB Chair, Mark King, “This is a critical time for the homeless and the community as a whole.”

King also expressed appreciation to all the front line staff and community agencies and organizations that provide services to the vulnerable.

Meantime, MP Anthony Rota says the Federal Government has announced the Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI).

It will provide a total of $1 billion dollars to quickly create up to 3,000 permanent new units of affordable housing across Canada.

A web portal on the CMHC website is now open for applications.
