It’s called a Walking School Bus and it’s arrived in North Bay.

The program is a partnership involving the Near North District School Board, the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit and the Canadian Cancer Society.

Cancer Prevention Senior Coordinator with the Canadian Cancer Society Nancy Wirtz says the program is all about helping kids get active.

“This is really an opportunity for the kids to get an extra 15 to 20 minutes of physical activity each day,” she said.

Wirtz goes on to say, “Our goal is really just to get kids more active and healthy and we want to start these behaviours at a young age, so it just becomes a part of their lifestyle.”

Alliance is taking part Monday through Friday all this month, then again in the spring.

Vincent Massey School will be doing the Walking School Bus one day a week for the next month.

Wirtz points out October is International Walk To School Month.
