Medical residency positions are increasing in Northern Ontario.

President of the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities Al Spacek says the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care has confirmed an increase of five positions for the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.

Spacek says this will go a long way in helping the region deal with doctor shortages. He says historically there has been a high percentage of physician graduates from the Northern School of Medicine who are staying in the north.

He also points out the northern increase comes at a time when the province is reduced residency positions province-wide by about 50.
