Police cruiserCity police are gearing up for back to school next week with a two week awareness campaign starting up on Tuesday, September 8th.

That’s the first day of school and Corporate Communications Coordinator Marie Lugli says officers will be monitoring traffic in school bus zones and along with high infraction bus routes.

They include Algonquin Avenue, Lakeshore Drive, Airport Road, Gormanville Road, Jane Street, Cassells Street and Front Street.

Police will be either stopping vehicles or recording the licence plate number to follow-up with the vehicles registered owner.

Lugli says when a school bus has stopped, motorists in both directions need to obey the red flashing stop lights and extended stop arm on the bus.

school bus distanceDrivers also need to stop at a safe distance (20 metres when approaching from the rear).

Overall, police say motorists need to plan for traffic delays during peak times, obey school bus stops and speed limits, be patient, try to make eye contact with children waiting to cross the road, obey crossing guards and be prepared to stop.
