The sun sets on Champlain Park
The sun sets on Champlain Park in North Bay.

A local celebration is coming up on Sunday to mark the 400th anniversary of Samuel de Champlain, the first European Explorer’s arrival in the Nipissing region.

The event is planned for noon on July 26th, at Champlain Park at the end of Premier Road.

Les Compagnons Program Director Lou Gagne says this is huge for the Francophone community but also for the city too, as it’s the first historical documentation for North Bay.

There will be a reenactment of Champlain’s arrival, a commemorative plaque unveiling, recognition of the First Nations, a display of Métis artifacts and booths offering information about genealogy.

Gagne says there’s also inflatables for the kids and entertainment.

The event is open to the entire community and those taking part are asked to wear the green and white colours of the Franco-Ontarian flag.
