Job action could be starting on Monday involving 44 Personal Support Workers, dietary staff, housekeeping, and maintenance staff at St Joseph’s Motherhouse, which is home to 60 elderly and retired Sisters of St Joseph of Sault Ste Marie.

In a release, the Motherhouse says the major dispute “seems to be wages.”

They also point out the Ontario Labour Board has ruled the Motherhouse to be the Sisters’ home and not a retirement home.

Officials say all care and services are funded through the Sisters’ salaries, pensions and investments and that the Motherhouse receives no public funding, and no money from the Catholic Church.

Meantime, Grace Ghunaim, Head of Strategic Communications for the SEIU says the second issue is language that they want the employer to change around considering internal hiring prior to posting positions to the outside world.

The employees previous contract expired in 2015.
